Shambhala 2017 Fractal Forest Set – Defunk

I think I’ve found the next source of renewable energy… Some of my favourite music – Zepplin, Fatboy Slim, Rage Against the Machine, Funk Hunters, Flume, Big Gigantic, Easy E – has all been chucked in a processor; blasted on high mode. Then once all that’s been familiarized and melded, some easy flow drum n’ bass, sexy guitar riffs, cruisin baselines, and heavy drops have been carefully placed in such ways to cause an atomically aligned flow generating an ever producing energy that’ll fill you up until you explode and start dancing in ways you never have before. Defunk specializes in his ability to take those elements of funk and jazz to create a mass surge of music that revolves around one thing – making you move! His ever evolving skill in playing on the classic elements of dance music whilst pushing the limits of heavy bass music is something that in the near future will be powering our vehicles. HKFL is officially in the energy game ladies and gents! Best get capitalizing. He dropped this mix at the Fractal Forest stage for this years Shambhala Music Festival, and it has single handedly given me the regret of not attending this year. You’re going to love this one. Crank the speakers, and try and tell me this doesn’t get repeated on your playlist, again and again.

For me, this goes on the snowboarding track list. I can’t wait to shred down the slopes with this as the fuel. Buckle up kids – Defunk raises the bar with this one! Check the SoundCloud for a complete track breakdown!

Happy dancing melomaniacs,

The Ride EP – Megan Hamilton

Voice of an angel coming at’cha! Megan Hamilton dropped her new EP off Westwood Recoordings earlier this morning, and let me tell you – it’s unreal. Her SoundCloud bio reads – “Causing funky riots and catchy bass tunes.” Bass most certainly fuels all six of these songs, along with Megans vocals, her own produced music, laced together with live instrumentation. The next 21 minutes and 84 seconds are just that – a ride. This beauty is out of Minneapolis, and now signed on with our Canadian dudes ‘Westwood Recordings.’ She’s made a name for herself bringing a European feel to her sound on our side of the world, releasing with Buygore, Mixmash, Ghetto Funk, and Audiophile, to name a few labels. On social media, she labels her identifying genre, “funk butter.” -LOL. Oh, and how ’bout that album artwork? It’s killer 😉

Megan, if you’re reading this, please come play in Edmonton, Alberta. We appreciate your music!

Have a great weekend melomaniacs

Hot Jazz & Fire- Duke Skellington

O baby, he’s done it again, that swing and glitch combo that gets me in all the right places. From the old school sexy, suave swing sound to the heavy, head bangin’ glitchy bass goodness, this track will have you on the floor dancing in no time.

Duke Skellington, the man, legend and swing king. DJ and music producer in Future Swing, Swing House, Electro Swing, Swing, and Glitch. Duke not only produces music alone but is also apart of the group Alias “The Vaude Villainz”, which include DJ Skyler Gilmore and Professor Watson, that run an electro swing/ swing podcast called “Jitterbug Jukebox.” I am a huge fan of Duke Skellington, Jitterbug Jukebox and the electro swing world in general, if you haven’t already noticed. The fact that I can jam it with my Granny and Grandad dancing in the kitchen to a late night with my friends makes my heart so happy. If you are 6, 16, 65 or 85 you can’t help but enjoy he fusion of the infectious classic swing sound and the new age electro beat. It will put a smile on your face and get you up the dance floor before you even hear the first drop.  So whether your with a child, friend or grandparent, throw on this track, turn it up loud and cut some shapes!

Much Love!

Say Something – The Funk Hunters feat. LINKS

Melos! The Funk Hunters have a fresh tune out of the oven and oh my is this one good! If you are not aware of The Funk Hunters they are from the West Coast with Westwood Recordings. As their name states they are bringers of the funk. Playing stages and festivals from all over the world, they are some of the best DJ’s at mixing different styles together in a way that creates an amazing fun vibe. If they are in your town be sure to see them!

With the help of LINKS on the vocals this jam hits you more in the feels than the funk. This is one of my favorite tracks from the duo. Keep it up Funk Hunters!!

Strobe – Deadmau5 (Kayoh Remix)

I’m going to throw it back a little this fine Tuesday evening. Ya’ll remember ‘Strobe’ from the one and only Deadmau5? One of my absolute favourites dating back to 2009! The original song builds so slowly. It’s layers build atop one another creating this really encapsulating experience. I had just ventured into the electronic world and would think to myself, “how can a ten minute song with no lyrics have such a beautiful story to it?” I think it must have been the first time I really let my mind wander away with the music.

This remix is something completely different from that. Kayoh takes this old cherished song of mine and flips it into something fresh. He takes that classic soothing melody Deadmau5 created and spices it up with some massive flavour. Finely balancing that calming original sound with some heavy bass, Kayoh really knocks this remix out of the park for me.

You’re going to want to crank this one way up.

Cheers,

-Mat
