Dehydrated Funk – High Contrast

“I USED TO THINK YOU COULD BE MORE PRESCRIPTIVE MAKING AN ALBUM, THEN I REALISED YOU CAN’T CONTROL IT IN ADVANCE, YOU’RE BETTER OFF JUST FOLLOWING YOUR HEART AND NOT OVERTHINKING IT. MUSIC IS AN ESCAPE FROM THE LINEARITY OF NARRATIVE AND LANGUAGE AND FROM A WHOLE LOT ELSE.” – Lincoln Barrett

These words resonate deep with me; music is an exquisite escape from reality and a universal language that permeates the very fabric of our souls whether we are aware of it or not. High Contrast’s song Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was the first Drum’n’Bass song I ever heard, and it single handedly turned me on to DnB. Hell, it changed the way I danced at shows, and it changed the way I listened to the drums in all music from that point forward. Years later, I am writing a blog post about this incredible DJ and producer known formally as Lincoln Barrett. I didn’t really know anything about the guy until I read the BIO on his website, but he’s a very interesting character. His musical influences are vast and when he started out he was actually more interested in film than music. Thankfully for us he chose the latter as his main vocation, and the rest is history. If you have a minute, please go read his story and jam some of his tunes, this guy really is a legend.

If you don’t have a minute, at least let me perk your ears to some other classic beat-makers that I only just discovered through him:

Grooverider, and this track for something a little darker

DJ Zinc

High Contrast has remained relevant and far ahead of the curve through his dynamic  stylizations of sonic sound waves. With 6 albums in tow and some seriously dope music coming out of 2017, I don’t think we will see him stop any time soon. This track in particular comes off his Questions EP from March of last year and it is a beautiful piece of work. Clear some space in your living room and have a flail session!

Kicky – Chet Atkins (Senor Griff Remix)

There’s something beautiful about simplicity, and in the context of this song I mean the kick, snare, and hi-hat. Now I am kinda biased because I do play drums and I’m a sucker for groovy beats such as this, but you gotta admit that the breakbeat, stop-and-start playfulness of the track gets your foot stomping immediately. Aaaand if it doesn’t, please check your pulse 😉

This remix is a very small departure from the original song, with a slightly faster tempo and a crunchy snap from the drums. Atkins is something of a guilty pleasure in my record collection, alongside other country/folk/bluegrass legends such as Les Paul, Jerry Reed, Hank Williams, and Django Reinhardt. Chet really was a legend – the guy’s nickname was literally Mr. Guitar and he ended up getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. My favourite fun fact about the man: as a child Chet suffered from severe asthma and thus slept in a chair to breath properly…he would play his guitar until he fell asleep each night, still grasping the instrument in his hands. No wonder he could play so flawlessly.

Lest we forget the genius behind this track – Señor Griff. From his soundcloud BIO: “Long time collaborator and resident DJ of the UKs longest running club funk and soul promoters, Jelly Jazz. Also exploring new style of clubbing with Rambunctious Social Club project in the southwest of Britain. Recently returned from 16 months in latin America traveling with my wife and collecting sounds as I go with a Sony PCM D50 handheld field recorder. We made a baby in Peru who was born back in England last June…a daughter! So time is short now…I’ll be fitting music whenever I can.”

Awesome human, wicked musical taste, check him out!

Prais’ Ya- Mildly Curious

Leave it to Mildly Curious to wash away those hump day blues that tend to creep in every once in a while. Those downtempo breakbeats and funky bass lines just hit you in all the right places, turning the struggle to make it to the end of the week into having a drink or two to celebrate its almost the weekend.

Just like her name, after spending some serious time researching anything about her, I am left curious to who this babe of a DJ is. The mystery behind the name along with the wicked art and sick beats displayed on her page leaves me with quite the lady crush on this beauty.

So go ahead, press play and get stoked for the weekend ahead! Happy Hump Day Humans!!

Much Love,

Ska Party – Skamanians (Cockney Nutjob remix)

Heyy ya’ll remember ghetto funk?! Sometimes I foolishly do until I recall how much fun it is to throw down to! If it doesn’t get your feet moving you better check yourself cuz you might be a paraplegic 😜  But seriously Cockney Nutjob is definitely worth a solid scope for upbeat party beats and funky ass tunes! Just love the grimy trombone in this one but honestly had a hard time choosing just one out of his repertoire to post, and the other beauty aspect is most of his tracks are available for free dl on his Soundcloud which is always nice. Hope you like!

Peace,
